How to Choose an In-Office MRI System

The choice of an MRI system is complex, and the typical physician will not be able to take the time, even if he or she is inclined to so, to self-educate in the arcane technical minutia of the machines. Here are some guidelines for narrowing down that choice:

  1. Take a realistic look at your budget. Most of our customers are able to easily pay for the machine and its associated costs with a modest scan volume. Feel free to try our easy-to-use MRI Financial Pro Forma (hyperlink) to estimate the potential cost and income of your MRI business.
  2. Make space for the machine. The MRI will use a minimum of 100 square feet of your office, and substantially more for some machines
  3. Mind the Regulatory Climate in Your State. Some states make it virtually impossible to operate in-office MRI. Consult with our specialists if you have questions about this.
  4. Do talk with a colleague about his MRI equipment and service vendor. We can put you in touch with other physicians in your area and your specialty who have in-office MRIs.
  5. Insist that your seller will guarantee that the system will comply with all manufacturers' specifications.
  6. If you're considering used equipment, look carefully at the seller.
  7. You can get a lot more for the money with used equipment, but there are unique dangers when going down that road. In particular,
    • Beware of a deal to sell the equipment without installation or warranty.
    • Make sure that you are getting adequate training for your staff on the specific equipment you are getting.
    • Be sure that you can send digital image files to your radiologist (not just films).
    • Make certain that the seller will guarantee that your machine will not suffer from image degradation due to RF noise in the environment.

When Purchasing an MRI System

  • Don't neglect to consider the yearly service costs. Even if you choose not to purchase a maintenance agreement on the system, get quotes for an all-inclusive service agreement for budgeting purposes. Be sure to include cryogens (if applicable) and consumables in your budget.
  • Don't educate yourself by talking to different vendors as your only learning method.
  • Don't scrimp on the training of your MRI operator, whose expertise is very important. Train a backup operator, even if it costs more.
  • Don't try to train five people to operate the MRI. They’ll never practice enough to become proficient.
